Words

The first level of phonological awareness is awareness of words.  When babies listen to speech they hear a stream of sound.  As young children grow and develop they begin to break this stream of sound into words.  Awareness of words, as a unit of spoken language, grows as young children grow.   They begin to notice where one word ends and the next begins.

The short films below show games which can help to develop awareness of word boundaries.
